South Shields Beach

South Tyneside is blessed with beautiful, award winning sandy beaches that stretch from the mouth of the Tyne at South Shields to Trow Rocks more than a mile away. The magnificent coastline has been fashioned by storms and unconquerable seas. Find an abundance of wildlife, hidden coves, twisting cliff top paths and cycleways and pioneering lighthouse, and at our northern extreme the mighty River Tyne.

Arbeia Roman Fort and Museum

Built in the AD 160s, this Hadrian's Wall World Heritage Site stood guard at the mouth of the River Tyne and controlled the main port of entry to the Roman Empire in Britain.Visitors can explore the Commanding Officer's House and Barrack Block and discover the reconstructed West Gate. The museum displays finds that have been excavated at Arbeia, including weapons, armour, jewellery and coins, which are amongst the most impressive found along the World Heritage Site.

Souter Lighthouse

Vist Souter Lighthouse. Operating since 1871 and at its time the most advanced in the world, explore the light house, its engine rooms and the family living quarters in the Victorian Keepers cottages. After your tour of the lighthouse climb the 76 steps to the tower to enjoy the views of the coast line from the mouth of the Tyne to the Tees.

The Customs House

Situated in a listed building overlooking the River Tyne The Customs House consists of a theatre, cinema and art gallery. Built in the 1860's and beautifully renovated a few years ago, the Customs House has a growing reputation as the focus of artistic and cultural life on South Tyneside.
